The Department of Water and Sanitation will lead its annual National Water Month campaign in March 2025, reinforcing the importance of freshwater conservation and sustainable water management. This initiative expands on World Water Day, observed globally on March 22 and led by the United Nations (UN).
The 2025 World Water Day theme, “Glacier Preservation,” highlights the alarming rate of glacier melt, which threatens global water security by contributing to floods, droughts, and rising sea levels. In South Africa, this theme emphasizes the urgent need for climate change adaptation and responsible water resource management.
Throughout March, the Department will host a series of events, discussions, and awareness campaigns featuring key government officials and water sector experts. These efforts align with the National Water and Sanitation Master Plan, addressing challenges such as water scarcity, infrastructure investment, and climate resilience.
